Rationalization of the 220 kV electricity grid in the city of Turin

Cable line T.292 «Pellerina – Politecnico»
Construction of the S.E. Pellerina – S.E. Politecnico sections of the new T292 power line, with a nominal voltage of 220 kV, connecting the Pellerina and Politecnico power stations.
The link extends for approximately 4270 metres.
The cable envisaged in the design is of the type ARE4H5E – 220 kV – 1×1600 sq.mm Cross section aluminium conductor with XLPE cross-linked polyethylene insulation.

Cable line T.294 «Stura – TO Centro PSS.»
The works are carried out mainly according to the type of road construction, for a length of 6390 metres, starting from the existing “TO Centro” PSS [Primary Substation] owned by Iren and arriving at the Stura EPS [Electric Power Station] owned by Terna S.p.A, both located in the urban area of the municipality of Turin.

Cable line T.298 «TO Ovest PSS – Pellerina EPS»
The link extends over a length of approx. 4650 metres and will connect the Torino Ovest PSS [Primary Substation] with the Pellerina EPS [Electric Power Station]
The cable envisaged in the design is of the type ARE4H5E – 220 kV – 1×1600 sq.mm Cross section aluminium conductor with XLPE cross-linked polyethylene insulation

Cable line T.983 «S.E. Martinetto – S.E. Pellerina»

The link extends over approx. 650 m and will connect the Pellerina PSS with the Martinetto EPS.

The high voltage cable has the following characteristics:

  • Type: XDRCU – PBT/AS E4 CLE
  • Phase voltage: 220kV
  • Conductor cross-section: 1600 sq.mm (longitudinally waterproof)
  • Insulation: XLPE (Extruded cross-linked polyethylene)
  • Screen: Copper wires (sheathed with water-repellent semi-conductive tape)
  • Metallic sheath: Extruded lead alloy
  • Outer sheath: PEAD (High-density polyethylene with a semiconductor layer)

The following installation methods apply:
Type 1 – For laying on urban and extra-urban roads – 150/220 kV cable (ANNEX B1)
Type 2 – For road crossings – 150/220 kV cable (ANNEX C1)
Type 3a – For laying in reinforced concrete tunnel with shielding channel
Type 3b – For laying in reinforced concrete tunnels – 150/220 kV cable (ANNEX D1)
Type 4 – Laying in agricultural land using Controlled Horizontal Drilling – 150/220 kV cable

Cable line T.291 «S.E. Pellerina – C.P. Levanna»
The link extends over approx. 700 m and will connect the Pellerina EPS with the Levanna PSS.
The high voltage cable has the following characteristics:

  • Type: XDRCU – PBT/AS E4 CLE
  • Phase voltage: 220kV
  • Conductor cross-section: 1600 sq.mm (longitudinally waterproof)
  • Insulation: XLPE (Extruded cross-linked polyethylene)
  • Screen: Copper wires (sheathed with water-repellent semi-conductive tape)
  • Metallic sheath: Extruded lead alloy
  • Outer sheath: PEAD (High-density polyethylene with a semiconductor layer)

Type 3b – For laying in reinforced concrete tunnels – 150/220 kV cable (ANNEX D1)

Cable line T.293 «Politecnico – TO Centro»

The link extends for approximately 2852 metres.
It is planned to use a set of three single core aluminium cables with a cross section of 1 × 1600 sq.mm and solid insulation in cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE).

Technical characteristics of the three-phase cable power line:

  • Maximum cable size: 118 mm (outer diameter)
  • composition: single core with compact rigid round filaments (diameter 51.3 mm)
  • weight: 15 kg/m
  • insulation technology: extruded
  • aluminium screen: section 185 mm2
  • outer sheath: polyethylene
